Glad I was carrying a little cash

Yesterday afternoon I bussed out to my favorite Walmart, planning to do one of my bi-weekly major grocery shopping trips.

As I pushed my cart along from one aisle to another, I heard an announcement over the store’s speakers informing all shoppers that the service allowing access to credit card, debit card, check verification, and ATM machine use was offline. The announcement told us that all purchases made would have to be made by cash only.

Continuing my shopping, I noticed many employees in the process of restocking shelves with merchandise from shopping carts fully loaded with a variety of stuff. Apparently lots of folks had tried to go through the checkout lanes without enough cash to cover their purchases. Lots of those carts. Lots of that restocking going on.

Though I was planning on using plastic to pay for my shopping, I happened to have enough cash with me to purchase most of the items on my list, albeit in smaller quantities than I would have otherwise. So I’ll be making another major grocery shopping trip sooner than I’d planned: early next week rather than early August.

I try to make it a point never to carry a lot of cash, but I always try to carry a little. I’m glad I had some cash with me yesterday afternoon at Walmart.
